The three systems, side by side
Open-Cell Foam
Lower density, higher expansion, better acoustics. Vapor-permeable, so it belongs where the assembly can dry.
Open-cell detailClosed-Cell Foam
Higher density, adds rigidity, becomes a vapor retarder at depth. Steel, rim joists and flood-exposed work.
Closed-cell detailBlown-In Insulation
Cheaper per R-value in a vented attic that is working. We install it, and we will recommend it when it fits.

The short version
Sometimes another system is the better buy. A vented attic with adequate depth, sound decking and sealed ducts can perform well on its own. Foam wins where air leakage and duct location are the problem, which on the Gulf Coast is most of the time. Fiberglass takes the rest.
The assembly decides. Open-cell at a conditioned roofline, closed-cell against steel, at rim joists and anywhere the assembly has to dry outward. Anyone selling one answer for every building is selling what they have on the truck.
It depends on the product, the depth and the ventilation on the day. We give you the manufacturer’s figure for the product actually used, in writing. The safety and re-entry guide covers what happens on the day.
